Research & Grant Opportunities

We are delighted to announce the creation of the COIS Education Fund. This fund will enable us to launch the COIS Research Fellowship Program, a platform that will help broaden research into the understanding, treatment, and management of OI.

Going forward, the COIS Research Fellowship Program will be a primary focus of our fundraising efforts and much of the monies raised by the community will be directed to this strategic endeavour. We look forward to your support––together we can help build a better future for OI communities, here in Canada and around the world!

The Francis Glorieux Fellowship for Medical Research

The COIS is proud to announce that our inaugural Research Fellowship will honour the lifetime work and achievements of Dr Francis Glorieux. His ground-breaking research into the treatment and care of OI patients and his commitment to the global OI community is world renowned.

The Francis Glorieux Fellowship for Medical Research will provide an opportunity for medical researchers to take his legacy forward and, like him, make important and far-reaching contributions to the OI family.

+ About Dr. Francis Glorieux

Dr. Francis H. Glorieux received his MD from the University of Louvain and his PhD from McGill University. It is there that he developed his interest in heritable pediatric bone diseases. His doctoral thesis demonstrated that calcitriol and phosphate allowed for control of the bone disease in hypophosphatemic rickets. This regimen is still used worldwide in such patients. He also demonstrated the beneficial effects of bisphosphonate in severe forms of Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Programs based on the Montreal protocols are now used all over the world. From 1973 to 2011, he was the Head of the Genetics Unit at the Montreal Shriners Hospital for Children and a Professor at McGill University. He is now Emeritus Director of Research at the Shriners Hospital and Emeritus Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics and Human Genetics at McGill. Since 2009, he has been the Chair of the Medical Advisory Council of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation (USA). He has published more than 315 peer-reviewed papers, and co-edited 3 books. He is the recipient of both the Bartter and the Neuman Awards of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR). He holds honorary doctoral degrees from the Universities of Amiens and Lyons (France). In 2004, Dr Glorieux was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest honor for lifetime achievement.]
